EXTREME BIAS: CNN's Peter Hamby Exposed

Who is Peter Hamby?
Peter Hamby is employed by CNN and is currently a political researcher at CNN’s Political Ticker blog. He joined CNN in 2005 with Wolf Blitzer and The Situation Room.

Hamby graduated from Georgetown University in Washington D.C. where he was the contributing editor of “The Georgetown Voice,” a college weekly news magazine. Later Hamby attended NYU to pursue his Masters degree in journalism.

In 2007, Mr. Hamby developed the “mini-bureau” (a form of The Political Ticker today) for South Carolina where he covered the political primaries. Thus, his career at The Political Ticker begins.

Today he continues to blog for The Political Ticker at CNN. His Twitter account can be found here.

Hamby and his ongoing campaign against Conservatives.
Mr. Hamby publishes content in two primary places: On CNN’s Political Ticker and also on Twitter. We here at this blog have been following Mr. Hamby’s articles and tweets for quite some time and have noticed something that hasn’t been pointed out by most media analysts: Hamby has a very anti-conservative stance.

Peter Hamby’s campaign is simple: over amplify blunders by Conservatives and mitigate blunders by Liberals/Progressives. By doing this, he subtly shows his bias. And Mr. Hamby’s not the only problem. Numerous authors at the Political Ticker are known to do the same—Mr. Hamby just leads the group in reporting.

Examples of Bias.
During the 2010 Southern Republican Leadership Conference, Mr. Hamby was ordered by CNN executives to cover the event for The CNN Political Ticker. The output turned out to be exactly what we expected: highlight and amplify the bad, find some way to counter the good, and omit anything positive.

Here are a few of his “Tweets” from that conference:
  • lotta empty seats in the room at SRLC as Michael Steele takes the stage about 6 hours ago via web- Haley Barbour earns applause by touting GOP govs who cut budgets, but the clapping dies off when he mentions Mark Sanford about 8 hours ago via web
  • just overheard a mom tell her young daughter at #SRLC, "No, we don't support Medicaid. Medicaid is for losers." about 8 hours ago via web
  • It's now mathematically impossible for Steele to be ousted, with 58 RNC members now publicly backing the chairman http://bit.ly/aOzPfc 2:19 PM Apr 9th via web
  • Though it hardly lacked partisan zingers, Palin spoke more about policy in today's speech than she has in the past http://bit.ly/c9Ro3p 12:20 PM Apr 9th via web
  • Palin talking about Yucca here at SRLC ... but in 2008, whenever she went to Nevada, she never mentioned it. http://bit.ly/bbkXgP 10:57 AM Apr 9th via web
  • Palin mentions Katrina out of the gate ... keen on the fact it went unmentioned at SRLC last night 10:42 AM Apr 9th via web
  • Newt finds a way to criticize Obama for shooting hoops on CBS. "Shooting 3-point shots may be clever, but it doesn’t put people to work." 6:42 PM Apr 8th via web
  • Literary references dropped by Newt so far: Orwell, Camus, Friedrich von Hayek. How will this play in Council Bluffs? 6:17 PM Apr 8th via web- Newt's new language about the Obama administration is "secular socialist machine" 5:56 PM Apr 8th via web
  • The RNC raised $11.4 million in March -- good numbers for them amid a spate of bad news. No word yet on how much cash they have on hand. 8:37 PM Apr 6th via UberTwitter

Mr. Hamby's All Over It.
Yes, he is.  When it comes to political mishaps, Mr. Hamby is over any mishaps that involves Republicans or Conservatives.  Take a look at this over amplification of the nightclub "scandal" a few weeks ago where a donor was reimbursed close to $2,000 that was spent at an adult-themed nightclub:

Now is this too much coverage?  Probably, but that's not the main issue. Mr. Hamby seems to be  absent when it involves Democrats - Rod Blagojevich (D-IL), Charlie Rangel (D-NY), John Edwards (D-NY), Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Alan Grayson (D-FL), Harry Reid (D-NV), John Conyers (D-NY)?  We see maybe one or two articles about each blunder from Democrats, if even, from Mr. Hamby. And if we do see them, they usually leave out the "D" next to the embattled Democrat politician.

Now let's take a look at the Mark Sanford (R-SC) saga, the governor of South Carolina. Was Mr. Hamby over this one?  Let's see how it was covered by Hamby and The Political Ticker:

One hundred and eighteen articles. Over-amplification?  Most likely an attempt to keep the story in the news cycle. Seems like the "Ticker" only functions when the person has an "R" next to their name.

The Ultimate Huffington Headliner and Media Matters Muppet.
What's the significance of these two websites?  Both are progressive ideology driven.  And that means it's a great source of "news" for Mr. Hamby. If Huffington's blog "newspaper" has something politically headlined, you can safely bet that it will be covered later on in the day by Mr. Hamby. And if the kids over at Media Matters are having a field day with the latest transcript they put together from Rush Limbaugh's show, you can bet Mr. Hamby will be covering it too. However, if something is being headlined at Drudge, HotAir, NewsBusters, or MichelleMalkin, you can forget about Mr. Hamby warranting it some coverage.

Who is ultimately responsible for Mr. Hamby’s employment?
Kenneth “KC” Estenson. “Kenneth "KC" Estenson is senior vice president and general manager of CNN.com, responsible for all aspects of CNN.com's business endeavors. Named to this position in September 2008, Estenson is based in CNN's world headquarters in Atlanta and reports to Susan Grant, executive vice president of CNN News Services.”
